HOLLY SPRINGS, NC- The Holly Springs Salamanders were able to hang on in a one-run thriller Tuesday night against the Florence Red Wolves 6-5 to win their first game of the second half. An early barrage of runs proved to be enough as the Salamanders were able to score six in the first four innings.
Holly Springs wasted no time at all starting the scoring in the first frame. Caleb Denny and Marek Chlup came across to put the home team up 2-0. In the second inning it was Ryan Nicholson leading off the inning with a triple. Nicholson would score on the SAC fly from Clay Woeste to extend the lead to three.
A huge confidence booster came for a struggling Jax Cash tonight, as he drove in two runs with two outs in the third. The Salamanders are now 5-0 on the year when Cash is behind the plate.
The Red Wolves would cut into the Salamander lead in the fourth however, Lukas Polanco and Todd Mattox would score to creep Florence back into the game trailing at that point 2-5.
Holly Springs would add only one more run in the fourth as this time it was Woeste’s turn to cross home on the RBI single from Denny. Sals’ lead 6-2
Across the next three innings the Red Wolves would score one run in each. A solo homerun from Polanco in the fifth, Cade Watson stealing home, and Clayton Peterson, who reached on a leadoff walk, coming home on a Mattox RBI.
After Holly Springs starter Kyle Mott left the game to the bullpen in the fifth inning, all but one reliever pitched only one inning. Hunter Stevens, the CPL leader in saves, pitched the final two innings, his longest outing of the year, picking up his sixth save on Tuesday night and securing the win for the Salamanders 6-5.
