HOLLY SPRINGS, NC- The Wilson Tobs came into Ting Stadium and used their early firepower to defeat the Holly Springs Salamanders by a final score of 7-1 on Saturday night. The Tobs scored 2 runs in the top half of the 1st inning, that would prove to be enough on the fourth matchup between these two teams in the first half of the CPL season.
Wilson got started early again, scoring first in this matchup for the fourth straight time. Designated hitter, Gary Mattis blasted a no-doubter to score Scaranda and himself. The Tobs would lead 2-0 after one complete inning.
Tobs starter, Jake Lewis, pitched 4 full innings giving up only one hit and striking out four. Lewis had to pass the ball to Braxton Bragg (1-1). Bragg would go on to receive credit for the win, even though he did allow the only run to score for Holly Springs.
Holly Springs finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Caden Miller scored on the sacrifice fly from Cash Young. The narrative of the night was that the Salamanders could not push their baserunners across home plate, as they left 12 stranded across the basepath.
Tobs bullpen pitchers were wheeling and dealing only allowing one run between 3 relievers. Bragg, Steven Worley and Nolan Devos combined for 5 innings, four hits, one walk, and 7 strikeouts. Tobs pitching staff combined for 11k’s the second highest against the Salamanders this season, tying themselves from June 6.
Holly Springs losses their fourth game at home, while the Tobs pick up their second win at Ting Stadium. The Salamanders will finish off the first half of the CPL season up in Virginia tomorrow, as they take on the Tri-City Chili Peppers at Sheppard Stadium.
