HOLLY SPRINGS, NC- The Holly Springs Salamanders defeated the South Wake Shakes for the sixth time this season on Independence Day by the final score of 2-1. A combined pitchers duel for both teams saw two earned runs between both parties involved.
The Shakes went nine up, nine down, their first time through the batting order, while the Salamanders were only able to get one hit their first time through.
The Salamanders were able to get on the board first, which has proven to be crucial in this affiliate series. Brice Martinez, who took a one-out walk would score on the throwing error from the Shakes catcher. Martinez was attempting to steal third when the throw from Josh Edwards one hopped into left field. Martinez second guessed himself but ultimately decided to push his luck and take home.
Salamanders lead for the time being 1-0.
The Shakes responded with a three hit sixth inning to tie the game at one apiece. Cody Muncy, playing for the Shakes tonight singled to score Davey Morgan from second. Morgan’s run would be the only one of the night for South Wake.
Alex Barker approached the plate in a tied game, but he was about to break it all by himself. Barker launched a moon shot onto HWY-55 to give the Salamanders the 2-1 and that result would hold.
Mike Boswell saved the game for Holly Springs, striking out all three of the final batters.
The Salamanders will return to CPL action of Wednesday July 7, as they travel down to the coast to take on the Wilmington Sharks. You can catch the action all season long on Flobaseball.tv
