HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C.
The Holly Springs Salamanders toppled the visiting Wilson Tobs by a score of 7-1 on Tuesday evening at Ting Stadium, extending the Salamanders winning streak to four games.
Cam Colmore took the mound for the ‘Manders and delivered six solid innings of work. The sophomore from East Carolina only allowed a single run on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. Phillip Sanderson (Freshman, Louisville) replaced Colmore in the top of the seventh and tossed three innings of no-hit ball, striking out two and only walking one. Colmore earned his fifth win of the season and Sanderson picked up his first save.
Right-fielder Adam Sisk (Junior, James Madison) starred in the first inning, throwing a Tob out at home and then smacking a two-run home run over the left field fence. Cory Wood (Freshman, Coastal Carolina) then padded the lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth. Dalton Hoiles’ (Junior, Shippensburg) two-run double and Dominick Cammarata’s (Sophomore, Charlotte) RBI single further extended the home squad’s lead in the bottom of the seventh.
The Salamanders travel to Morehead City tomorrow to begin a two-day road trip, but will return to the friendly confines of Ting Stadium on Friday evening to host the Fayetteville SwampDogs at 7:00 p.m.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 19th season in 2015, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,200 alumni drafted and 79 of those – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut; while another notable alum – Russell Wilson – won Super Bowl XLVIII.
