Salamanders take league season opener from Zookeepers
HOLLY SPRINGS, NC – Last night the Holly Springs Salamanders took down the Asheboro Zookeepers 11-3 in the CPL league opener.
Starting pitcher, AJ Campbell (Barton College) went six innings and only gave up two runs in the first inning. He tallied eight strikeouts in five scoreless innings and secured his first win of the season.
Holly Springs didn’t let those two runs stop them. They quickly responded with two runs of their own from Ben Prather (Centre College) and Hudson Ellis (Dallas Baptist) tying the game.
The Salamanders took control of the game in the third inning with a two-run homerun from Jake Stanley. Anthony Mitta (Mount Olive) followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2.
A solo shot from Ryan Martin (Georgia Highlands) in the fourth extended the lead. An RBI Walk in the eighth from Prather solidified the Salamanders victory 11-3.
Mitta went 3 for 3 with two runs, an RBI and walk giving him the top spot in the CPL leaderboard with a 1.000 batting average.
The Salamanders return to action on Sunday, June 1 at 5:05 p.m. to take on the Martinsville Mustangs. The theme for the Sunday’s game is Princess and Pirates and will feature a pregame meet and greet. Buy your tickets here!
