MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — The Holly Springs Salamanders (3-2) dropped its midweek contest to the Morehead City Fish Tacos (2-4), 7-4, Tuesday night at Big Rock Stadium.
After being held scoreless in the first inning, the Salamanders put themselves in an early hole as multiple errors helped the Fish Tacos load the bases. Moments later, two sacrifice flies by Morehead City opened up a 2-0 lead for the home team.
By the fifth inning, the Fish Tacos had extended their lead to four and the Salamanders were in dire need of a response. And, right fielder Will Stewart delivered, lacing a 2-RBI single to cut Morehead City’s lead in half, 5-3.
But, the momentum was short lived for Holly Springs. In the next inning, center fielder Ben Watson’s double highlighted a two-run inning for the Fish Tacos and extended Morehead City’s lead back to four runs.
Despite a late push by Holly Springs, its numerous mistakes proved to be too much to overcome. Wild pitches, infield errors and countless walks by the Salamanders helped generate an early lead for the Fish Tacos that was too much for Holly Springs to conquer.
In the losing effort, Stewart’s patience and timeliness at the plate was impressive. Although the junior from North Carolina tallied just one hit, he helped drive in three of Holly Springs’ four runs.
The Salamanders will get one day off before hitting the road again to play the Wilson Tobs. First pitch for Thursday’s game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Fleming Stadium.
